Seven seniors from the six coastal counties have been selected for the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game.
Going in alphabetical order, let’s start with D’Iberville’s Colton Deshazo. A converted tight-end now playing half back, Deshazo leads the Warriors in receiving and is second in rushing with 470 total yards and three scores on 60 touches.
Next up is George County’s Marquez ‘MoJo’ Dortch, four-star recruit and Ole Miss commit, who leads the Rebels in receiving and in the return game with 630 all-purpose yards and four all-purpose touchdowns.
Another Ole Miss commit over at Gautier, four-star left tackle Bryson Hurst, who protects the blindside of Kaden Irving and the state’s top passing attack.
On the defensive side, how about Poplarville linebacker and three-star Mississippi State commit Khalid Moore, who leads the Hornets in Sacks, passes defensed, forced fumbles, and blocked punts. He’s also responsible for seven of Poplarville’s 10 receptions with two touchdowns.
Over at Biloxi, three-star defensive lineman and Mississippi State commit RJ Moss, who leads the Indians with three quarterback hurries and is tied for the team-lead in tackles for loss and fumble recoveries.
On special teams, St. Martin’s Gabe Showalter and his big right foot, currently leading the state in yards per kick-off with a long of 72. He’s rated four and a half stars out of five on the Khol’s National Kicker Rankings.
Last but not least, the top class of ’22 wideout in the state, Ole Miss commit Larry Simmons out of Moss Point, first on the Tigers in receiving and second in rushing with more than 500 total yards and seven touchdowns on 37 touches.
The coaching staff also getting some love with Gulfport’s John Archie named linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.
Now here’s what some of the players are saying, starting with Colton Deshazo: “I’ve worked so hard my whole life for moments and opportunities like these. I’m just so grateful all the work I’ve put in and sacrifices I have made over the years are starting to finally pay off.”
And then MoJo: “I feel great that I have this opportunity to be able to show out on the biggest stage. I worked hard for this opportunity. So, I’ve got to go out and do my best.”
Khalid Moore chiming in: “It’s awesome. Just another blessing. I’ve always wanted to play in it and finally do it. I just know it’s going to be another great experience for me. I’m truly blessed and very excited.”
And what about Gabe Showalter? “It honestly feels great. I’m grateful to have this opportunity. I can’t wait to show the country that Mississippi can and will produce top tier specialists.”
Bryson Hurst: “I’m proud of myself for what I’m achieving, but it doesn’t stop here. I’m very excited because this has always been something that I wanted to achieve now look at me.”
Finally, RJ Moss: “I’m beyond blessed and honored to go play in this game and represent the state of Mississippi and play with all the other great athletes. I just want to show people how much talent we have in the ‘Sip.”
Bernard Blackwell North-South All-Star Game featuring a ton of Coast talent as well. Starting with a trio of pairs: Robert Cook and Kam Williams from D’Iberville, Illinois commit Ashton Hollins and Trent Howell from George County, and Isaiah Atkins and Raymond Collins from Harrison Central.
Moving on, Moss Point’s Breland Curry, Ocean Springs running back David Humphries, as well as both Connor Davis and Ahmad Harmon from Poplarville.
